Popular Reasons to Call an Electrical Contractor

electrician Kirkwood, MO

Any building that has been recently renovated will likely have had its wiring checked by an electrician. Older buildings can often benefit from the attention of an electrician. It is a good idea to get the wiring checked whenever the building is decorated. Even so, other faults can develop that require calling the electrician in.

Early signs that an electrician is needed

Wiring lasts a long time but is not immune to wear and tear. The wiring in many older buildings also may not measure up to current local regulations. In any case, renovating or taking up residence in a building is the ideal time to have the wiring checked for safety. A proper wiring check calls for the attention of a qualified electrician.

The first signs of a problem may not be obvious. Flickering lights may indicate localized power outage, rather than a problem in the house itself. Likewise, total power loss is more often a localized issue. If blackouts and brownouts continue, however, or are isolated to a single building, there may be problems in the wiring.

In any sudden power failure, the first thing is to check the fuse box. The fuse box is a safety feature, which automatically shuts off the power in case of a hazardous electrical surge. Turn off all electrical appliances before resetting the fuse box and activate them one at a time to test which caused the overload. Common culprits are old kettles, which place a sudden acute demand on electricity.

If the fuse box fails, there may be smoke and sparks. This is a sure sign to call an electrician. Less obvious indicators include smoke or sparks from a wall socket, rather than from the main fuse box. In these cases, the fuse box can usually isolate specific circuits in the wiring to shut off power selectively. Most fuse boxes are simple enough to use. However, if there is any reason to think that the fuse box itself is faulty, call an electrician.

Smoke, sparks and fire

An indicator of a problem is simply that an appliance is not working. Smoke, sparks and even electric shock do not presuppose that the device itself has stopped. Faulty devices and wiring can limp along for years despite obvious signs of problems. It is not a good idea to ignore these signs, however. Plainly put, electrical faults can cause fires.

Homeowners should not use water to put out an electrical fire. Turn off the device, either at the wall socket or at the fuse box. This will stop the sparks and should end the smoke. If a fire has already started, use a gas or powder extinguisher. Then call an electrician.

Time to call an electrician

A call to the electrician now can literally save a call to the fire service later. The slightest electrical fault is extremely dangerous. Electrical wiring is not a DIY job, it should be fixed only by a professional. Fluctuations in power, sparking surges or any sign of smoke are good reasons to call an electrician immediately.
